My kids love to snack on meat.

Not cookies, not cupcakes, but meat.

And, after devouring a serving of Candied Bacon at Bob Evans,  they begged for more.  (Seriously, they love meat: this Pounder and beef sticks from our local deli are the most sought after snacks in our house.)

If Bacon is Good, Caramelized Bacon Is Better

Attempting to score points in the “Best Mom Ever” contest, I made a batch of Copycat Bob Evan’s Candied Bacon as a pre-dinner snack at home.

These disappeared in minutes.  Literally.  Gone in a flash.  THAT delicious.

What You’ll Need to Make Caramelized Bacon

  • 12 Slices Applewood Smoked Bacon
  • 1/2 Cup Packed Brown Sugar
  • 2 Tbsp Water
  • 1/2 Tsp Cayenne Pepper (Optional)

For a unique bake sale item, you can also cut each piece of bacon in half before cooking. Simply purchase 24 4-Inch Bamboo Skewers and thread them through the bacon prior to baking!

How to Make Candied Bacon

First, preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit and line a large baking sheet with foil.

Next, place a wire rack on the foil-lined cookie sheet and spray with oil.  (I just use my metal cooling racks for this).

Drape the uncooked bacon over the wire rack (see picture below).

In a small bowl, combine the brown sugar, water, and cayenne pepper if using.

Next, brush the sugar mixture over bacon.

Finally, place the tray in the oven and bake for 20-25 minutes or until bacon is browned.

Once done baking, let the bacon sit for a few minutes to “firm up”. Next, transfer to a paper towel-lined plate to cool.

(Tip: I try to lay them out separately as much as possible. If you pile them on top of each other, they tend to stick together.)

Unique Bake Sale Treat

If you want to create a stampede at the Bake Sale table, cut the bacon in half before baking and thread onto 4-Inch Bamboo Skewers.

Place 2-3 skewers of Candied Bacon in treat bags and watch these sell-out in a flash! Because who doesn’t love bacon? Plus meat on a stick is awesome.
